Getting to the Singapore Zoo is straightforward. We took the MRT to Khatib Station, followed by a Mandai Khatib Shuttle. This route is efficient and well-marked, making the journey hassle-free for visitors.

Upon entering, We was struck by the lush greenery. The zoo is well-maintained, clean, and vibrant, making it welcoming from the start.

The variety of animals is impressive. From playful orangutans to majestic white tigers, each zone offers a unique experience. The animals seem well-cared for, living in habitats that closely mimic their natural environments.

3 Easy Ways to Go to Singapore Zoo

There are 3 ways to reach Singapore Zoo: the MRT & Mandai Khatib Shuttle, Bus 138, and Taxi.

For first-time visitors, I recommend the MRT & Mandai Khatib Shuttle. It’s budget-friendly and easy to navigate.

If you’re near Ang Mo Kio district, Bus 138 is a good choice. For a quick and convenient trip, a taxi is the way to go.

Below, I’ve detailed these three options to help you decide.

1. How to Go to Singapore Zoo by MRT and Mandai Khatib Shuttle

To get to Singapore Zoo, take the North-South Line MRT to Khatib Station. Go out through Exit A and take the Mandai Khatib Shuttle to the zoo. The bus fare is just SGD $2 and the travel time is around 15 minutes.

The Mandai Khatib Shuttle offers a loop service directly between Khatib Station and Singapore Zoo.

It operates from 8:00 AM to midnight, with departures every 10 to 20 minutes.

You can pay the fare using an EZ-link or NETS FlashPay card, as cash is not accepted.

Below, I’ve provided a step-by-step guide on how to take the MRT and Mandai Khatib Shuttle to the Singapore Zoo.

1. Board the North South Line to Khatib MRT Station and then look for the Exit A. After you go the exit gate of the MRT station, you need to turn left.

2. Walk straight and then turn left.

3. Walk down the stairs of Khatib MRT Station and then turn left.

4. This is the bus stop for the Mandai Khatib Shuttle. Wait here to get on the bus.

5. This is the Mandai Khatib Shuttle. Simply tap your EZ-Link or NETS FlashPay card when you board the bus. Upon arrival, follow the signboards for a 2 to 3-minute walk that will lead you directly to Singapore Zoo.

2. How to Get to Singapore Zoo by Bus 138

The second way to go to Singapore Zoo is by taking Bus 138. You can catch it at Ang Mo Kio bus terminal. The fare is SGD $1.72 with an EZ-link or NETS FlashPay card, or SGD $2.50 in cash. The trip takes about 39 minutes.

Bus 138 operates from 6:00 AM to 11:45 PM, leaving every 6 to 17 minutes.

Note that Bus 138 isn’t a direct route to the zoo, making about 29 stops before arriving.

Below, you’ll find detailed instructions on how to take Bus 138 to Singapore Zoo.

1. Catch the North South Line to Ang Mo Kio MRT Station and then look for the Exit C. From the Exit C, take the escalator down.

2. Go up the stairs and then turn left to take the escalator up.

3. Go up the escalator.

4. This is Ang Mo Kio bus terminal. Continue straight until the end.

5. Turn right and you’ll see the bus stop 138.

6. Queue up here for you to get on the bus 138. When you arrive at the Singapore Zoo bus stop, a brief 2 to 3-minute walk will lead you to the zoo. Don’t worry, there are directional signs to help guide you there.

3. Take a Taxi

For the fastest and most convenient journey to Singapore Zoo, simply hop in a taxi and relax. This convenience, however, means you need to shell out extra money.

To make your transportation easier, here’s my suggestion.

Option 1:

1. Take the North South Line to Khatib MRT Station and then walk to the Exit A.
2. The Taxi Stand is located just outside of Khatib MRT Station, Exit A.
3. Hail a taxi to Singapore Zoo.

Estimated Taxi Fare = SGD $13

Option 2:

1. Take the North South Line to Ang Mo Kio MRT Station and then walk to the Exit B.
2. The Taxi Stand is located outside of Ang Mo Kio MRT Station, Exit B.
3. Hail a taxi to Singapore Zoo.

Estimated Taxi Fare = SGD $18

What Animals You Can See at Singapore Zoo

Visit Singapore Zoo for a real adventure among the wild.

It’s home to over 4,200 animals, including kangaroos, lions, white tigers, and more, all roaming freely across 14 zones in a 28-hectare park.

You’ll see everything from orangutans to crocodiles and penguins. The zoo also has 2 exciting shows.

I’ve explored every corner and can’t wait to share what each zone and show offers.

First up, let’s explore the Wild Africa zone!

1. Wild Africa

Wild Africa shelters a lot of African lions and cheetahs. These big cats welcome you to the zoo with their strong physique and distinct features.

Also, part of this zone are the African painted dogs, which are known for their rare fur colors.

This area is also filled with fierce leopards and distinct wild animals like zebras, giraffes, and white rhinoceros.

So, if you’re a fan of them, take a tour around this place.

Look at these cute creatures! Meerkats habitually live underground to take care of their babies.

On the other hand, red river hogs often hang around the streams and ponds.

2. Primate Kingdom

Primate Kingdom is where you’ll see different monkey species in various sizes and colors.

For one, you’ll catch sight of some douc langurs, which are recognized for their vibrant features.

Did you know that black-and-white ruffed lemurs are considered as endangered species?

Likewise, these hyperactive creatures walk, run, and jump all day long. After their tiring activities, they seek food with the help of their long tongues.

Just like the black-and-white ruffed lemurs, colobus monkeys are known for their striking colors. These species are also tagged as rare kinds of monkeys, together with the cotton-top tamarins.

So don’t miss this chance to witness these creatures personally when you tour around Singapore Zoo.

3. Tiger Trek

Tiger Trek gathers a unique breed of big cats. Instead of the ordinary reddish-orange cats, the place is filled with white tigers.

Distinctly, these animals have royal blue eyes that perfectly complement their white fur.

Also tagged as Bengal tigers, their unique color is a result of rare genetic mutation.

4. Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia

Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia is a zone occupied by various mammals including the pygmy hippos. These animals love to play around swamps.

However, they aren’t much aquatic compared to the typical hippos.

Malayan Tapirs look like pigs slash elephant features. But even with their structure, they are actually from the horse species.

On the other hand, rock hyraxes are part of the elephant and manatees classification.

Both species love to swim, so you might catch them sunbathing during your visit.

This area is also packed with monkey species like Hamadryas baboons and gibbons. These animals have inimitable characteristics.

Hamadryas baboons are intelligent creatures with strong body structures.

Likewise, the gibbons are hailed as the gymnast of the wild because of their elongated arms.

These bird species often wander on the grounds instead of flying.

Distinctively, cassowaries are part of the few bird groups who can’t fly. Despite that, these creatures are fast runners, good jumpers, and excellent swimmers.

5. Treetops Trail

At Treetops Trail, you’ll encounter some proboscis monkeys hanging around the trees.

It’s not difficult to locate them because of their long nose structure.

They may be strange-looking but their unique features are actually very useful.

Their nose helps them in attracting mates and warning their fellow species.

These black-colored primates are quite known for their fierce personality.

They can easily defend their family members with the help of their strong bodies. Because of that, they are dubbed as the swinging king and queens of the wild.

6. Orangutan Island

Continue your Singapore Zoo adventure at Orangutan Island.

Here, you’ll run into some Bornean orangutans. These tree-dwelling mammals are characterized by their long, reddish hair.

Comparatively, the male Bornean orangutans have larger and higher cheeks than the females.

Just like Bornean orangutans, Sumatran Orangutans spend most of their time on trees. With sturdy arms, they can easily move back and forth up above like Tarzan.

Most Sumatrans orangutans have lighter hair color and longer beards.

7. Australasia

If you see some big, muscular creatures hopping in Australasia, chances are, they are grey kangaroos. These animals can go as high as 2 metres and weigh up to 66 kilograms!

But, they might not be as active as other animals during the day because they are nocturnal.

Tree kangaroos are not your ordinary type of hopping species.

Instead of constantly leaping on solid grounds, they tend to stay and gallop on trees, hence their name. Their small structure makes it easy for them to climb around.

8. Fragile Forest

Singapore Zoo’s Fragile Forest offers a diverse range of animals, from monkeys to birds.

Spot some chimpanzees, mandrills, along with some Celebes crested macaques and white-faced sakis.

Most of these monkey groups act and think like humans, so don’t underestimate them.

As you continue with your tour, you’ll pass by a group of lesser mousedeer. These animals are tagged as the world’s smallest hoofed mammal.

In addition, there are squirrels in this area. Most of them are just enjoying their food while strolling around.

Also, part of the community are these vibrant bird species.

Common crowned pigeons are famous for their nest-like crest and blue features.

The eclectus parrots, on the contrary, got a multi-colored body.

Even with the differences, both bird species are very intelligent.

These unique creatures never go unnoticed. Malayan flying foxes are very distinct because of their fox-like features.

Plus, they are very large compared to the typical bat species.

9. Frozen Tundra

At Frozen Tundra, you will run across some raccoon dogs.

But did you know that they are actually more associated with the fox species than raccoons?

These creatures are highly active at night and feed on both plants and small animals.

When they communicate, you might think you’re hearing a donkey.

But think twice because these are aquatic birds called penguins. These animals are not just great swimmers but also outstanding hunters!

10. Elephants of Asia

Elephants of Asia is another highlight in the Singapore Zoo that deserves a visit.

In this zone, you will be surrounded by the gentle giants. Elephants are the largest land mammals that could weigh from 5,000 up to 14,000 lbs.

Despite their size, they primarily feed on plants and fruits.

11. Reptile Garden

Reptile Garden greets you with a variety of large lizards like komodo dragons and horned lizards. These two are branded for their strange-looking appearance.

The komodo dragons, from the name itself, give you an idea of their powerful features.

The horned lizards also come with unique characteristics. And when they spurt blood from their eyes, beware because they consider you as a threat!

Aside from eating, this is how Indian gharials spend most of their days. These slender animals from the crocodilian species often reside in clear rivers.

12. RepTopia

If you’re looking for a place full of reptiles, then RepTopia should be part of your must-visit list.

Here, you’ll have a great encounter with golden poison frog and electric blue gecko.

There are also emperor scorpion, king cobra, and alligator on display.

Each of these reptiles has its own characteristics that make them stand out. Most of these animals can easily survive on their own.

13. Tortoise Shell-ter

Tortoise Shell-ter welcomes you to the dwelling of different types of tortoises.

Ready yourself as you come face to face with giant tortoises. These animals take pride in having the longest lifespan among all other vertebrates.

Also, on the list are African spurred tortoises, radiated tortoises, and ploughshare tortoises. These are recognized because of their unique shell color.

14. Rainforest KidzWorld

Rainforest KidzWorld is such a fun destination loaded with some cute ponies.

Ponies are small horses with firm bodies and short legs. Compared to typical horses, they are gentler that’s why they are popular as pets.

On top of that, this place shelters other animals such as hedgehog, fancy rats, goats, ferrets, and more. Most of these creatures are on the milder side, making this area great for kids.

What Shows You Can See at Singapore Zoo

Aside from animal exhibits, there are 2 shows in Singapore Zoo to look forward to. These are not just enjoyable presentations but also informative ones.

So, don’t miss these shows during your visit.

1. Splash Safari

Squeeze in this amazing playful session with the sea lions. Splash Safari is a delightful water entertainment with a unique cast.

It’s because the main performers of this show are the adorable and lively sea lions.

This incredible animal show will make you fall in love with sea lions even more! They are masters in amusing the crowd with their fantastic moves and funny antics.

Without a doubt, these creatures are great entertainers that deserve a standing ovation. So, if you want a hearty laugh, then this one is a must-watch!

2. Rainforest Fights Back

Another fun-filled show awaits visitors of Singapore Zoo. Rainforest Fights Back is a great exhibition that shows how talented animals are.

More than 15 different species parade their natural abilities to the crowd. Watch as they jump around, fly above, and do spectacular tricks!

If you want a more personal encounter, volunteer yourself during demos! And, you might get lucky to share a photo with one of the animals on the show.

You definitely won’t go hungry while touring around the Singapore Zoo. It’s because there are plenty of restaurants inside for everyone.

If you’re looking for fast-food meals, there’s KFC. This is a great option for those who are also on a budget.

Ah Meng Restaurant, on the other hand, is another popular food spot. This place is quite crowded, especially at lunch.

So, if you want to skip the long queues and jam-packed crowd, it’s best to take your lunch earlier, around 11:30 AM perhaps.
